The Position ****
Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll design and build backend systems that determine customer eligibility, manage enrollment workflows, and support program operations across multiple utility territories. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, data analysts, and utility partners to ensure a seamless experience for customers while meeting complex operational needs.
How You Will Make an Impact:
You will be part of a team focused on enabling customer participation in demand response and other energy flexibility programs. Your systems will make it easier for utility customers to enroll in these programs, verify their eligibility, and connect supported devices, helping the grid stay resilient and clean.
What You Get to Do:
Lead the design and development of backend systems that evaluate eligibility and manage enrollment for energy programs.
Work with structured data (e.g., usage data, account metadata) in PostgreSQL, applying domain logic for eligibility and customer workflows.
Build and evolve scalable, maintainable services and APIs in Python, integrating with internal systems and external utility platforms.
Collaborate with product and operations teams to translate program logic and business requirements into software.
Write clean, testable code and participate in code reviews and system design discussions.
Mentor and support junior engineers; contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
What You Bring to Uplight ****
5+ years of experience building backend systems in production environments.
Strong expertise in Python (e.g., FastAPI, Flask, or Django) and PostgreSQL, with attention to correctness and maintainability over raw scale.
Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP), containerization (Docker), and CI/CD best practices.
Experience working on eligibility, enrollment, or workflow automation systems is a plus.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to simplify and implement complex domain logic.
Passion for clean energy, decarbonization, or helping customers engage in grid programs is a strong bonus.
Bonus Points: ****
Experience with real-time or streaming data systems (e.g., Kafka, Structured Streaming).
Prior work in the utility or energy sector.
Exposure to infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines.
