Job Description

We want our product decision making at Shawbrook to be informed by a thorough understanding of our customers' needs. We have a wealth of data from which we need to derive meaningful actionable insights. This requires an interrogative approach to data analytics: we are not simply monitoring and reporting figures, we are running exploratory data analyses, generating testable hypotheses, and building datasets and visualisations which help us towards provably better customer outcomes.

The Software Engineer role covers three main areas: data rich software applications; coordinating our user tracking; and building A/B testing capabilities. We are building a suite of intuitive, interactive data analytics applications to enable stakeholders to view and digest analyses and insights. We need to build, deploy, and maintain performant applications, with a focus on quality, reproducibility, and usability. We have a wide range of digital systems within which we track and analyse user behaviour.

As we undergo a technical transformation, bringing more of our tech in-house, building out a range of new systems, and ensuring they work seamlessly with a wide array of existing internal and external systems, the challenge is to bring a focus on the quality, accessibility, and consistency of data models throughout. This will require a pragmatic approach to where we are now, and an optimism and growth mindset for focussing on where we can be next.

This is a fast-paced environment, working in an Agile team, where you will be required to hit the ground running, pick up new languages and systems quickly, and contribute to deliverables, whilst being given the freedom to share and implement your own ideas.  At this transformative time for Shawbrook, you’ll have the opportunity to make your mark right away as you undergo pivotal, impactful work with truly diverse opportunities to support your development.

Responsibilities

  • Defining company-wide standards for how we define our data models consistently, to track seamlessly across diverse areas

  • Embedding quality engineering ways of working at Shawbrook- including release etiquette and environments, version control, code reviews, mobbing and pair programming, TDD, architecture.

  • Advocating for high quality standards and controls in how we build and share our data applications.

  • Collaborating with a wide array of different departments - Product, Engineering, Risk, Finance, Compliance, etc - to ensure that our standards are shared, adopted, and celebrated to ensure a consistent quality across the bank

  • Working alongside the digital marketing team to build upon our current approach to event based monitoring.

Qualifications

  • Proven proficiency in software engineering, with a focus on Python (including Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Plotly and Dash), Flask and JavaScript/React using object oriented design principles and patterns

  • Experience working in an Agile methodology with Azure Dev Ops; deploying and monitoring reliable web applications and environments

  • Experience driving and embedding engineering best practices including, unit testing, integration testing and TDD/BDD

  • Curious and enthusiastic, with a keen interest to learn new concepts and technologies, and the ability to digest them quickly, working with autonomy

  • Interest in high level business outcomes, and ability to fully understand issues before jumping to solutions

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to moderate technical discussions and nurture a collaborative, ego free culture
