Infrastructure Engineer

Fluent: Ask a data question, get an answer.

At Fluent, we use cutting-edge AI to answer your data questions. We help our customers answer questions like: “which artists achieved more than 100 million streams over the last year?”, “How many donations did our charity receive last month?” and “Which of our customers are about to churn?” without needing to rely on a data analyst to answer those questions. With Fluent, you simply ask a question in plain English and Fluent serves you the answer.

Fluent recently raised a $7.5M investment round and work with brands like Bain & Co. and NBC Universal.

👋 About the role

At Fluent, we believe that a small team of amazing people can outperform the average team of 100 people and have focused on the best and brightest in our team of 12. We are now looking for an exceptional Infrastructure engineer who is technically excellent, product minded and can navigate complex customer requirements working between on-premise and cloud deployments. We’re an early stage startup so you need to be comfortable shipping pretty fast, and be happy working under a reasonable amount of ambiguity. Please see our careers page for more about life at Fluent.

🎯 What will you be working on?

At the moment, we’re focused on taking customers live, iterating the product , and cracking through more of our roadmap.

A key requirement from some of our largest enterprise customers is to use Fluent on their own on-prem infrastructure rather than in our cloud environment. The most immediate priority for this role is to:

  • Understand our customer's deployment requirements i.e. bare metal vs managed k8s etc.

  • Build and scale tooling to let them deploy and maintain Fluent on their own infrastructure

  • Provide support and ongoing maintenance activities for customers

Alongside this we're looking for someone who can own our own cloud and dev infrastructure and solve the gnarlier problems we have there. We use LLMs extensively which are slow and error prone and come with a lot of infrastructure challenges.

We also have a huge list of backend oriented problems to solve on our core product. The ideal candidate might own our infrastructure but also contribute to the product when necessary.

🤟🏼 You'd be a great fit if you're:

  • Have deep knowledge running and scaling cloud infrastructure and experience of setting up on-prem deployments. Realistically this means k8s/helm experience.

  • Great problem solving and system design skills. The most important thing for us at the moment is going fast, so we value the ability to create simple solutions for complex problems

  • Years of experience isn’t necessarily a good metric, but you should be confident calling yourself a senior engineer. We’re looking for someone who can pick up a problem and solve it.

💻 Our Current Stack:

We’ve tried to keep the stack as simple as possible, and the current non-exhaustive stack is:

  • Python + Django + PostgreSQL + Render. We have some AWS stuff here but very little.

  • Typescript + Next.js + Tailwind + Vercel

You need not have used any of these tools before.

⚙️ Interview Process

The interview process will be:

  • Fill in the short application form with your your CV

  • We get back to you and set up a 30 min interview with Cameron, the CTO and one of the cofounders on Zoom/Google Meet/etc. to talk about your experience, the company, and do culture fit stuff.

  • If that goes well, we’ll do a ~1hr technical assessment with two of the product team over Zoom which will be about a real world problem related to Fluent

  • A paid workday with Fluent: come into our office or work remotely with us for a day. You'll spend the morning working on a task, have lunch and spend time with the team and then demo it in the afternoon.

  • And if that goes well, we’ll make you an offer!
