Backend Engineer - AcquiTech

We’re here because we believe in small businesses. We believe they deserve better than waiting weeks for a loan. And we believe it’s our job to help them grow.

We started in 2012 with these principles, and we hold true to them today – now that we’re one of the fastest-growing fintechs in Europe. In the time between, we’ve built the best tech platform in lending, won several awards and opened up £3.5 billion in loans to over 90,000 businesses.

So what’s next? Our mission now is to help one million businesses who need us. To do this, we’ll need new products and partnerships. But most of all, we’ll need smart, hands-on people to join us on the journey and get us to our goal.

The role

We are looking for a Backend Developer who is enthusiastic about crafting remarkable backend infrastructure, motivated to join a vibrant team, and thrilled to be transforming the landscape of small business financing at

The Acquisition Tech team focuses on acquiring new customers through various channels and technologies. You’ll be responsible for driving growth through data engineering and tooling. Your primary focus will be to work with paid search providers and direct mail to attract new customers while also ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations, including unsubscribes and vulnerable population guidelines.

You will play a vital role in developing and refining attribution models that accurately measure the effectiveness of our acquisition efforts. From start to finish, the Acquisition Tech team has ownership of the technology that enables us to acquire new customers and grow our business.

Projects are highly diverse and require proficiency in various technologies, but all are centred around Python and SQL. The primary packages that we use on a daily basis include SQL-Alchemy, Scikit-learn, pandas, and Django. As a team member, you'll be expected to have experience working with these packages and be able to utilise them effectively to deliver high-quality solutions.

We place a strong emphasis on creating our own custom packages to solve unique challenges and designing / managing databases that are efficient, scalable, and reliable. If you have experience with DevOps practices such as containerization and continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD), it would be a significant advantage.

There'll be plenty of opportunities to make an impact and develop your skills, we invest in research to find the best possible outcomes. Our way of working is like a ‘data meritocracy’, meaning you’ll factor project time in for research, and make decisions that are evidence-based.

  • Solid Python software engineering experience.

  • Mastery of SQL-Alchemy, Scikit-learn, pandas, Django, and PostgreSQL.

  • Familiarity of designing, building, and managing relational database.

  • Strong numerate background, i.e. maths, physics, Com-Sci, engineering etc.

  • Passionate about innovation, evolving technologies and engineering best practices.

  • DevOps exposure: i.e. containerization, continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD).

  • Ability to create custom packages and solutions for unique business challenges.

  • Happy working in an unstructured, dynamic and autonomous environment.

  • High technical aptitude and attention to detail.

  • Focus on ‘getting things done’ and delivering high quality solutions.

  • Strong grasp of web technologies and their practical applications.

We expect to pay from £45,000 - £65,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and regularly remunerate staff for their increasing value to our business.

At iwoca, we prioritise a culture of learning, growth, and support, and invest in the professional development of our team members. You'll have access to ample opportunities for skill-building, mentorship, and career progression, and can decide your career path, focusing on frontend, branching into full-stack, or developing your skills in project and people leadership.
